Bodywork
Curator:Ray Schwartz: zenmp(AT)hotmail(DOT)com
Dear CI36 participants,
As we know contact is an axis which many disciplines touch, merge, and pass through. Primary among these is bodywork. Many practitioners of CI view the form itself as a form of therapeutic engagement. Also, one can be sure that throughout the event, as in any jam situation, there will be spontaneous exchanges of delicious, healing touch and energy.
It is my intention as curator of Bodywork for CI36 to facilitate a space of focused practice in methods of one on one hands-on methodologies. These could range from Massage Therapy, Reiki, Rolfing, Somatic practices such as: Alexander Technique, The Feldenkrias Method of Functional Integration, Body-Mind Centering – as well as Trager, Zero-Balancing, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Aston Patterning, Shiatsu, TuiNa, Accupuncture, Acupressure, Reflexology, etc. I am sure there are also many homemade remixes of the above forms and others I have neglected to mention. But you get the idea, I hope.
One defined rule, so far, is that in order to practice Bodywork at the event you must be a registered participant.
If you are interested in offering bodywork at CI36 please contact, me, Ray Schwartz at the email above with the subject line: "Bodywork CI36". I would love to have a sense of who is interested in this by April 8th, so that any conversations we have as a group will have enough time to digest, and clarify before we meet together in June. Thank you for your interest and kindness. Ray.
Classes
Curators:Robert Anderson: robert(AT)contactimprovisation(DOT)co(DOT)uk
Ulla Makinen: ulla(DOT)makinen(AT)gmail(DOT)com
A major component of the celebration will be the opportunity to participate in classes being offered by teachers. As well as providing training, classes can provide insights into individual teachers interests and inspirations within CI. We hope the classes can further the exchange of ideas and practice that has kept this dance form alive and vibrant for 36 years! We wish to schedule classes that cover a broad range of themes and approaches to CI. Therefore we encourage teachers young and old to submit their suggestions for classes (whether they are contact ‘chestnuts’ or new areas of research).
How to get involved with this area?
Please email Robert and Ulla with descriptions of classes that you would like to offer. Most class will be two hours in duration. Let us know if you wish numbers of participants to be restricted. Also let us know if the class is suitable for all levels of experience or if you think the class should be advertised at a particular level.
Ulla Makinen and Robert Anderson are the primary curators for the classes at CI36. They are supported by Leilani Weis. Alicia Grayson is our Hub contact person. We look forward to receiving your class descriptions.
Communication Center
Curators:Ronja Verkasalo: ronjaverkasalo(AT)yahoo(DOT)co(DOT)uk
Max Gautier: joyfuldanseur(AT)yahoo(DOT)com
We will be setting up an area for daily announcements, schedules, messages, and more. Please email us if you have suggestions.
Documentation
Curators:Cheryl Pallant: cpallant(AT)vcu(DOT)edu
Vitali Kononov: arte.somatic(AT)gmail(DOT)com
Co-curators Vitali Kononov and Cheryl Pallant will make and collect written and visual documentation of classes, talks, and performances. Documentation will serve participants on-site, those hooked up electronically, for instance via the web. Products may be used in an issue of Contact Quarterly or used for historical purposes later. This team will be soliciting and organizing volunteers and work exchange participants who have written and/or visual recording skills.
Family
Curator:Leilani Weis: leicielo(AT)tiscali(DOT)it
This team supports families with kids, giving them information that can help them enjoy and participate at CI 36. If you are thinking about bringing your kids to the event please contact Leilani with information about your kids ages, and childcare needs. We will organize a parent network so that we can support each other. Please offer suggestions for a family jam or other special events to include the "future contactors."
Information Technology
Curator:Ken Manheimer: ken(DOT)manheimer(AT)gmail(DOT)com
Please email Ken if you have questions about computers, networks, etc. at CI36.
Jams/Music
Curator:Adrian Russi: adrian(DOT)russi(AT)bluewin(DOT)ch
This curation area involves the jam structures at CI36.
There will be a jam space available 24 hours a day throughout the event. Most of the jams will be unstructured, but there will be some Jams with a specific focus such as a score and/or live music.
Some structured jams will be planned in advance and others will be scheduled as CI36 unfolds. A second jam space will be available for the structured jams.
Facilitating the aspect of (live) music is another part of this curation area. This will include discussion structures to find diverse ways to integrate music into jams.
How to get involved with this area?
The most direct way during CI36 is to come to the jams with your full presence and follow your own pathway in communication with the other bodies moving in the space!
And before CI36 starts we invite you to share your ideas and questions with us about jamming and/or music. We will include your suggestions in our planning of the jams and in the discussions to take place during the event.
If you are experienced in music improvisation in connection with dance and you would like to share this music during jams with the dancers and other musicians please contact us! It would be useful for us to know how many musicians are coming and what kind of instruments you are bringing.
What are your thoughts about music at CI36?
We look forward to hearing from you!
Labs
Curators:Pen Dale: penster4(AT)hotmail(DOT)com
Joerg Hassmann: joerg(DOT)hassmann(AT)web(DOT)de
WHAT IS A STUDY LAB?
A lab is not a class! Be aware if your actual desire is to TEACH or to LAB. In a class you teach, giving information about something you have already figured out. So if you are coming with something you already know and want to share – try teaching a class instead. Labs are not the right format for this kind of sharing.
On the other hand, to lead a lab, you come with questions, and a structure to help find some answers. So if you have a burning question that you don’t know the answer to, and are looking for a space to work on it with like-minded people, then GREAT. A lab is your format!
The beauty of a lab structure is you actually participate yourself, rather than staying outside the process. Remember this is where YOU get to work on YOUR questions. Ideally a lab should be structured in such a way that a small group o f people get to work on problem solving around a particular issue.
If you think your topic of interest is more suited to a class than a lab, ask us about applying for a TEACHING space instead...
WHO CAN OFFER A LAB PROPOSAL?
Anyone can offer a lab proposal, as long as you have an idea, and a way of structuring it so others can participate. If you would like to lead a lab at CI36, please contact us now with your ideas, so we can start slotting things into the schedule. Enquiries to be directed to Pen Dale at penster4@hotmail.com.
HOW ARE THE LABS SELECTED?
A combination of labs will be selected prior to the start of CI36. Others we would like to be proposed and selected while the event is running, in an attempt to provide a forum for ideas which emerge at the festival itself. We aim to encourage a wide variety of lab topics, facilitated by a wide variety of people, so bring on those ideas! There will also be space provided for spontaneous, unstructured labbing to happen for those ideas that just come up spontaneously.
SO YOU WANT TO PROPOSE A STUDY LAB?
Please contact the Labs team, and we will send you more information about how to officially register your proposal.
Things to think about:
- Why – why are you doing this?
- What – be as specific as possible.
- How – structure, timing, methods.
- Who – Will you have help? An assistant?
- What size – How will you deal with large groups?
- Your role – Remember a lab is not a class. Participate!
